Personal Narrative
ENGL 1050
McDowell
Personal Literacy Narrative
Overview:
In this course, you will encounter a variety of genres, the first of which is the personal narrative. For this assignment, you will pick an event from your life that you deem worthy of spending the time to narrate. Your primary audience will be your instructor and your classmates. You may also wish to consider a secondary audience, such as any of the people that appear in your narrative.
Specifics:
Your paper should have an introduction that grasps the reader’s interest, and a conclusion that wraps up the event neatly—no “to be continued”, cliffhangers, etc. Also pay close attention to the Eight Tricks to Writing a Narrative that we discussed in class. Your paper should be 7-10 pages double spaced in 12 point font. Final drafts must be sent electronically via email. It should be evident that you spent significant time with the internal revision process.
Attached to your paper, you must also attach a 1-2 page reflection that addresses your experience with writing this personal narrative AND in which you compare your own paper to one (or more) of the sample narratives that we read outside of class (the assigned reading, NOT the ones we edited in class).
